Little Baobab: A Taste of Senegal in the Heart of London
Little Baobab offers something refreshingly soulful: a vibrant Senegalese dining experience rooted in tradition, rhythm, and community. It’s a rare blend of tradition and atmosphere that turns a simple night out into a cultural moment in the heart of London.

Tucked inside the vibrant layers of Peckham Levels and now also glowing from its new spot at The Africa Centre in Southwark, is Little Baobab. Founded by Senegalese chef and cultural curator Khadim Mbamba, this buzzing little gem has been serving up not only food but community, music, and joy since its early pop-up days. If you walk in expecting just a meal, you’ll leave with a whole experience; the kind that lingers in both your memory and on your tongue.
London’s food scene is no stranger to global flavours, but what Little Baobab brings to the table feels deeply personal. Think bubbling pots of Mafé and fiery jollof, wafts of bissap in the air, and live music shaking the walls while you’re trying to decide between the thiebou dienne or the chicken yassa. It's the kind of place where strangers become tablemates, and your dinner might just end with a dance. Basically, it’s West Africa served on a plate, in all the best ways.
Why We Love Little Baobab
Authenticity: Little Baobab’s menu is a warm, delicious tribute to Senegal’s rich food culture, filled with dishes that feel like a big comforting hug. One of the favourites is the Chicken Yassa—tender boneless chicken marinated to perfection and cooked with sweet caramelised onions and a tangy hint of lime, served with fluffy rice and a fresh side salad.

Then there’s the Thiebou Dienne, a real showstopper featuring sea bass fillet paired with jollof rice, cassava, carrot, and aubergine, all brought together with a touch of bissap and tamarind sauce. If you’re in the mood for something hearty, the Lamb Mafe—slow-cooked in a rich peanut butter stew—is full of deep, satisfying flavours.

Wholesome Ambiance: Dining at Little Baobab feels more like stepping into a lively Senegalese gathering than a typical night out. The space comes alive with regular live music from some of London’s top African musicians, setting the tone for an evening full of rhythm and flavour.
The communal tables also make it easy to strike up a chat with your neighbours, and the combination of live music, communal seating, and vibrant decor creates a unique and enjoyable dining environment.

The interior exudes a chic, contemporary feel, with ambient lighting and stylish decor that sets the stage for an unforgettable evening. As the night progresses, the space transforms into a lively lounge, complete with curated DJ sets and live entertainment from Thursday to Sunday, 6:30 PM to 2:00 AM.
Affordability: Little Baobab has generous portions and reasonable prices, giving great value for a high-quality dining experience.
Inclusivity: Vegetarian and vegan options are thoughtfully included, so there’s something tasty for everyone no matter what your dietary preferences are.

What to Consider
Plan ahead: Service can slow down when the place gets busy (which it often does). If you’re in a rush, it’s not the best choice. But if you’re here to soak it all in, you won’t mind.
Noise Levels: If you're craving a quiet, candlelit dinner, this might not exactly be your scene. The music, the chatter, the laughter it all gets loud, in the best kind of way.
Limited Hours: The restaurant operates on specific days and times, so checking ahead is recommended to avoid disappointment.
